Who told you that lie? Shedding false labels
Scripture Focus:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:2 (NIV)
The False Identities We Embrace
As women, we often wear labels that were never ours to begin with: Not enough. Too emotional. Failure. Unworthy. Invisible. Too much. These false identities creep in from childhood wounds, failed relationships, social expectations, and even the pressure we put on ourselves to be everything for everyone.
Without realizing it, we begin to make decisions from these places. We avoid opportunities because we believe we’re not good enough. We settle in relationships because we think we don’t deserve better. We stay silent when we’re called to speak because we feel unqualified. These decisions shape outcomes that reinforce the very lies we believed, creating a cycle of self-sabotage and insecurity.
How False Identities Affect Our Lives
When we live from a false identity, we:
Miss out on God’s best because we settle for what feels “safe.”
Draw boundaries based on fear instead of faith.
Form relationships rooted in neediness instead of confidence.
Struggle to hear God’s voice clearly because our inner critic speaks louder.
Resetting Your Thoughts: What God Says About You
But here’s the good news: your identity is not what the world has called you — it’s what God has declared over you. And His Word is full of truth about who you are:
You are chosen. (1 Peter 2:9)
You are fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
You are forgiven. (1 John 1:9)
You are a daughter of the King. (Romans 8:17)
You are enough in Christ. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Every day, you have the choice to align your thoughts with God’s truth or continue living under labels that were never meant for you.
Practical Ways to Embrace Your God-Given Identity
Start with Scripture Daily:
Begin your day with a verse that affirms your identity in Christ. Write it down, speak it out loud, and reflect on it throughout the day.
Identify the Lies:
What false names have you accepted? Write them down — then write God’s truth next to each one. Example: “I am not enough” becomes “His grace is sufficient for me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Surround Yourself with Truth-Tellers:
Be around women who see you through God’s eyes and remind you of your worth when you forget.
Pause Before You Decide:
When faced with a big choice, ask: Am I making this decision from fear or from faith? From shame or from identity?
Declare the Truth:
Speak out affirmations rooted in Scripture. What you speak shapes how you think, and how you think shapes your life.
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling me by name and not by my shame. Help me to recognize every lie that has taken root in my heart. Replace it with Your truth. Remind me daily that I am Yours, and that is more than enough. Renew my mind and reshape my decisions so they reflect who I am in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
